Patensie is the last village before the Bavianskloof
Wilderness Area and is located in the lush and scenic
Gamtoos River Valley with its forested hills and
intensive cultivation of fruit, especially citrus, and
vegetables.
This is a
popular area with a large number of accommodation
options and activities. Among other things, near
Hankey are the grave of Sarah Baartman as well as what
is believed to be the largest sundial in the southern
hemisphere.
From Patensie
one passes the well-known rock formation known as Queen
Victoria's bust (photo below) before entering the Groot
River poort with its looming cliffs, ample water and
riverine bird life.
Then one passes
through the productive farming area of Cambria before
coming to the fantastic Baviaanskloof Wilderness area.
The
Baviaanskloof well deserves its World Heritage Site
status, offering an incredible variety of scenery,
vegetation types, rock formations and ever increasing
populations of wild life and birds.
