Break Away to the Valley
Patensie Oranges

Patensie is the last stop before entering the Baviaanskloof Wilderness area from the East.  Guarded by the majestic Cockscomb mountains, this little town's activities revolve around
the Citrus industry.
The Gamtoos Valley boasts a warm, pleasant climate all year round and is free of tropical diseases, such as malaria.
Visit the impressive Kouga Dam built in 1967.  You may even be surprised to see
Queen Victoria's profile!

Patensie is the last village before the Bavianskloof Wilderness Area and is located in the lush and scenic
Gamtoos River Valley with its forested hills and intensive cultivation of fruit,
especially citrus, and vegetables.

This is a popular area with a large number of accommodation options and activities.

Among other things, near Hankey are the grave of Sarah Baartman as well as what is believed to be
the largest sundial in the southern hemisphere.
The Sundail was build by Dirk Schellingerhout, my Grandfather.

Then one passes through the productive farming area of Cambria before coming to the
fantastic Baviaanskloof Wilderness area.

The Baviaanskloof well deserves its World Heritage Site status, offering an incredible variety of scenery,
vegetation types, rock formations and ever increasing populations of wild life and birds.
